Start with a simple room system
Give every crate a destination room before you fill it. Use labels such as Bedroom 2, Kitchen or Office, then add a short contents note. A label on the lid and another on the long side stays visible whether the crate is on the floor or in a stack.
Pack one room at a time where possible. This reduces mixed containers and lets you finish a space completely, while also giving removalists clear instructions at the new address.
Balance weight across the crate
Books, canned food and cookware are dense, so they should be spread across multiple crates. Use lighter items such as towels, cushions or clothing to fill the upper space. A crate should be full enough to prevent movement but light enough to carry safely.
Do not put all heavy items at one end. Even weight distribution makes the crate more stable and reduces strain when it is lifted, carried through a doorway or placed on a dolly.
Build stable stacks
Place the heaviest crates at the bottom and lighter crates above them. Keep the stack on a level surface and make sure each crate is sitting squarely on the one below. Avoid creating tall towers in narrow walkways where someone could brush against them.
In a truck, place crates so they cannot slide into doors or other equipment. Use the available space efficiently, but leave safe access routes and never make a stack so high that it becomes difficult to unload.
Keep fragile items in the right place
Wrap glasses, plates and ornaments individually with packing paper or clean towels. Use soft material to fill gaps so the contents do not rattle. Mark the crate Fragile and place it where it will not be crushed by heavy items.
A plastic crate offers a strong outer shell, but it still needs careful internal packing. Check for movement before closing the lid and avoid forcing items into a container that is already full.
Make unpacking part of the plan
Load the crates you need first for the first night last, so they are easy to reach at the new home. Keep cleaning supplies, chargers, toiletries and basic kitchen items together in clearly labelled Open First crates.

Before the truck arrives, take a few minutes to sketch where the main stacks will go in the vehicle or storage area. Keep walkways clear, avoid placing crates in front of doors and make sure the heaviest containers stay low.
